Featherbed Books opened on Newbottle Street in 2022 after owner Nicole Brennan left a job with Amazon to start the shop, filling a gap left by the absence of any other independent bookshop in Houghton-le-Spring. The shop stocks fiction and non-fiction for adults and children and hosts a regular Tuesday book club discussing a different title each session. It occupies a former vets' unit on the town's main shopping street.
