Every micropub in Britain descends from this converted butcher's shop: Martyn Hillier opened it in 2005, invented the form — one room, real ale, conversation as the entertainment — founded the Micropub Association, and collected an MBE in 2024 for what he started. In May 2026 he retired and handed the keys to Paul Monroe, a long-time regular, on a gentleman's agreement to keep it mostly as it always has been; the original chopping tables are still in service and the till still takes cash only. The room seats about a dozen. The movement it started numbers in the hundreds. Genesis sites rarely stay this honest.
