The Old Grocers occupies a former hair and beauty salon on Beastfair in Pontefract town centre, a building that traded as a grocery shop called Slaters in the 1800s before its recent conversion. Opened in June 2019 by Amanda Johnson and Dave Dobson, it was the first micropub in Pontefract, spread across ground and first floors with seating for around sixty. The pub keeps a rotating line-up of five cask ales alongside real cider and a selection of gins, sourcing beer from smaller Yorkshire breweries such as Chin Chin, Fernandes and Wilde Child. There is no food, television or fruit machine, in keeping with the micropub format of conversation over cask beer. In 2024 the Old Grocers was named Wakefield CAMRA's Pub of the Year, recognition built on a short but consistent record since opening.
