The Record Shop trades from Inverness Place in Roath, buying and selling vinyl and CDs across genres from a shop originally known as Hippo Records. Pat, the previous owner, ran the business for around 40 years before retiring; a sale process in 2025 briefly looked set to close the shop before Jason and Jayne took it over. Stock ranges from cheap secondhand vinyl and 7-inch singles to CDs, with regular clearance boxes and a strong run of 1980s pop alongside rock, soul and reissues. The shop is small and quiet compared with the city centre's larger record stores, set back from the main road on a short parade of shops off City Road. It opens Tuesday to Saturday with shorter hours on some days. Trade is mostly walk-in and word of mouth rather than online sales, and the shop continues to be known locally by its colourful shopfront.
