Wilderness Brewery was founded in late 2017 by James Godman on the Mochdre Industrial Estate outside Newtown. The brewery specialises in barrel-aged and mixed-fermentation beers rather than conventional cask ales, co-fermenting with wild yeast strains and ageing much of its output in oak barrels for months at a time. Fruit for its sour beers, including the barrel-aged plum ale Naive Melody, comes largely from the brewery's own orchard when the season allows. Beers are bottled and canned on site, with several released as vegan-friendly. The on-site shop sells the current range direct to callers Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm, alongside an online store for wider distribution. Godman has pointed to mid Wales' fluctuating seasonal temperatures as well suited to barrel conditioning, a central part of Wilderness's production process. The brewery has built a following among specialist beer traders across the UK for its small-batch, ingredient-led approach rather than high-volume core beers.
