Catalyst Arts began in 1993, when a group of recent art school graduates set up an artist-led exhibition space independent of Belfast's larger institutions. The gallery now operates from 5 College Court in the Cathedral Quarter, a single-site venue with no satellite branches, showing installation, performance, video and sound work by emerging and experimental practitioners. Governance passes to a new committee of member artists most years, keeping programming rotated rather than fixed to one curatorial voice. Exhibitions and events run alongside artist talks and occasional publications. Entry is free, and opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm (4pm on Saturdays). Over three decades, the organisation has given early exhibition space to numerous Northern Irish artists before wider recognition, remaining one of the longest-running peer-run galleries in Ireland.
