An Carn Distillery sits on Tirkane Road outside Maghera, at the foot of Carntogher in the Sperrins, an area taking in Slaughtneil, Tirkane and Glen. Paul Kelly, sole director of An Carn Distillery Ltd since its 2021 registration with Companies House NI, set up the family farm distillery to make single malt whiskey from barley grown on surrounding South Derry farmland, water drawn from Lough Bann and peat cut from nearby bogs. Fermentation runs for 72 hours, roughly double the industry standard, before spirit goes into first-fill bourbon casks. The resulting single malt, non-chill filtered and free of added colour, is sold through specialist retailers including Irishmalts.com rather than a distillery shop front.
