Ballindalloch Distillery stands within the grounds of Ballindalloch Castle, home to the Macpherson-Grant family since 1546. Guy Macpherson-Grant and his mother Clare Nancy Russell converted a set of former farm buildings on the estate into a working distillery, with production starting in September 2014. It is described as Scotland's first single-estate distillery: barley for the whisky is grown, and the spirit distilled and matured, entirely within the estate boundaries. The family's connection to whisky-making goes back to the 19th century, when Sir George Macpherson-Grant was involved in building Cragganmore and the original Speyside distillery. The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay opened the distillery formally in 2015. There is no drop-in visitor centre; tours of the still house and estate farmland take place by appointment only, booked directly with the distillery. Bottlings are sold through the estate shop and specialist whisky retailers rather than supermarkets, and the operation remains distinct from the large multinational drinks groups that own most neighbouring Speyside distilleries.
