Bloomers of Bakewell trades from a stone building on Water Lane dating to the 1600s, where the Bloomer family began selling their version of the Bakewell pudding in 1889, a recipe the shop says has passed down through four generations. Matthew Kelcey and Ryan Hutchinson took over the business in 2023 and opened a new production unit at Riverside Business Park to keep pace with demand, while retail trading continues from the original Water Lane shop. The bakery makes around 25,000 Bakewell puddings and over 70,000 Bakewell tarts a year, alongside warm rolls, pasties, pies and cakes baked on site daily. Puddings are sold both to eat in and wrapped to take home. Bloomers is one of several Bakewell businesses claiming a direct line to the town's original nineteenth-century pudding recipe, and trades as a single independent bakery and shop rather than a multi-site chain.
