Janis Embleton, known professionally as the Shuttlethrower, teaches hand-weaving from her studio at Swinton, a village a few miles from Duns. She works on a vintage Swedish Ulla Cyrus countermarch loom alongside teaching looms from Ashford, Dryad and Louet, and her practice has taken her to Yunnan Province on a study trip and to Stockholm to collaborate with the designer Asa Pärson. Classes range from a half-day taster session, in which beginners weave a length of wool tweed in a chosen twill pattern, to two-day courses covering warping and dressing a loom, plus a session on colour theory for those wanting to build a set of coloured samples. A tartan scarf class produces a finished piece in soft lambswool to take home. Sessions run for individuals and small groups, with Embleton also teaching at other venues on request.
