Roma Caffè and Deli was founded in 1987 by two Italian families, sisters Lorraine and Anna and their husbands Rocco and Giuseppe, whose grandparents had emigrated from the Frosinone and Avellino regions of southern Italy. The deli counter carries imported meats, cheeses and olive oil alongside tinned goods, panettone and made-up hampers, while the adjoining caffè turns out pizza, pasta and sandwiches from a kitchen that also supplies outside catering. The business moved to its current Bury New Road unit in 2008 during the redevelopment of Whitefield town centre, and three generations of the founding families are now involved in running it. It closes on Sundays, Mondays and bank holidays, keeping instead to a Tuesday-to-Saturday counter trade that has held since the shop's earliest days.
