Architects John Bruce & Son built the Speedwell Bar on Perth Road in 1903 for property developer James Speed, whose initials still mark the building's facade. Generations of Dundee drinkers know it as Mennie's, after Henry Mennie, whose family ran the pub from the 1920s until 1995, when Jonathan Stewart took over; the Stewart family still owns and runs it today. Grade B listed, the interior keeps its four-tier mahogany gantry holding around 160 malt whiskies, a Jacobean ceiling and original Edwardian toilets with Shanks urinals. As a freehouse rather than a brewery-tied pub, it keeps Deuchars IPA on permanent tap alongside two rotating guest cask ales from breweries such as Timothy Taylor and Black Sheep.
