The Stanley Spencer Gallery occupies a former Wesleyan chapel on Cookham High Street that the painter attended as a child with his mother. Opened in 1962 by a trust set up after his death, it holds one of the largest collections of his work anywhere, including paintings, drawings and lithographs. Exhibitions rotate through the trust's holdings and loans, with the village itself a recurring subject in Spencer's paintings.
