The Palace Cinema occupies a former corn exchange on Malton's Yorkersgate, converted for film in 1914 and rebuilt in 1934 with a new entrance canopy, a proscenium arch, and stained-glass windows depicting dancing figures in the Art Deco style. Family-run and independent, the cinema now operates three screens, one of which seats just twelve people and is thought to be among the smallest commercial screens in the country. Alongside first-run and independent film, the programme includes live broadcasts of theatre, opera, and ballet. Drinks are served in real glasses and hot drinks in real mugs rather than disposables, and a pick-and-mix counter sits by the entrance. The building is Grade II listed, its Corinthian pilasters and symmetrical frontage still intact behind the modern projection kit.
