Wincanton Museum opened in 1986 in a Grade II listed cottage on the town's High Street, once owned by the local Quaker meeting. The Wincanton History Society, formed the following year and now a registered charity, runs the single-site museum from its current home at No. 5 High Street. Displays cover the social history of the Georgian town and its surrounding district, including its long association with the racecourse and profiles of notable residents, drawn from a collection of artefacts, documents, posters and photographs. The museum opens Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, 10am to 1pm, staffed by society volunteers. The society also runs an annual talks programme and a History Day event, and operates a community lottery to help fund preservation of the collection.
