Y Llew Coch, known in English as the Red Lion, is run by mother-and-son team Beryl and Berwyn Hughes in the centre of Dinas Mawddwy, an old drovers' village at the foot of the Bwlch y Groes pass. Beryl, a retired primary school teacher, cooks alongside Berwyn, an art graduate, while Beryl's husband Wynn and their other two sons, Gerallt and Carwyn, still run the family farm on the village outskirts. The pub's public bar is little altered since the 1960s, with a Victorian bar counter whose copper top replaced a Formica surface in 1963, and a scrubbed table reckoned to be around four hundred years old. Six letting rooms sit above the bar. Food centres on homemade pies and a Sunday carvery, served alongside a changing choice of cask ales.
