Stuart Whatley returned to Skye after studying painting at Glasgow School of Art and, with his father, opened Edinbane Pottery in 1971 in the village of Edinbane, on the road between Portree and Dunvegan. Whatley later built a wood-fired kiln and a salt-glaze kiln on site in the early 1980s, techniques the workshop still uses to finish its stoneware. His wife Julie McWhirter joined the business in 1998, and their son Chris now works alongside apprentice Josie Allan, continuing three generations of throwing and firing on the same croft. Visitors can watch potters at work in the studio and browse jugs, bowls and lamps in the attached shop, which is inspired by the land and wildlife of Skye. The pottery opens seven days a week from Easter to October and on weekdays through winter.
