The museum building on Kelburn Estate at Fairlie was erected in 1898 to house New Zealand artefacts brought back by the 7th Earl of Glasgow, David Boyle, who became Governor of New Zealand in 1892 after a naval career: Māori spears, Kauri gum, albatross and penguins. Ayrshire domestic and agricultural implements and a small natural history display sit alongside. In the Old Byre, Don Aldridge's satirical cartoons trace the Boyle family, here since the 12th century.
