David and Ruth Elkington started Roost in 2015 in Talbot Yard, the little food quarter that helped turn Malton into 'Yorkshire's food town', and roast their coffee there on a fully electric roaster run partly off their own solar panels. It is explicitly independent and family-owned — a husband-and-wife roastery with an espresso bar attached, small-batch and principled. In a yard full of good producers, it is the coffee. Drink an espresso in the yard, and take the beans home to prove it travels.
