The Petersgate Tap opened in a former betting shop on St Petersgate in October 2016, run by father-and-son team Alan and Chris Gent. The pub focuses on real ale and cider from smaller and regional breweries, pouring a rotating list of guest beers rather than a fixed range, and does not belong to any brewery or pub company. It has been named Cider Pub of the Year by the local CAMRA branch in successive years and has appeared repeatedly in the Good Beer Guide since opening. The building sits on a stretch of St Petersgate that had struggled for footfall before the pub arrived, and trade here is credited locally with bringing custom back to that part of Stockport town centre. Inside, the pub keeps a simple, functional layout suited to drinking rather than dining, with no food served. It marks ten years of trading in 2026, an anniversary the Gents planned to mark with a tasting event.
