The Pickled Fig is a delicatessen and artisan bakery on Prestongate in Hessle, opened in October 2018 by husband-and-wife Robert and Larissa Harrison. Robert is a second-generation baker trained in his family's bakeries, and the shop bakes its own breads, focaccia, cakes and pastries in a small in-house bakery. The counter keeps around fifty cheeses at a time alongside charcuterie, gourmet sandwiches, piadinas, wines, spirits and dry goods drawn from Yorkshire and further afield. It trades as a single, owner-run site, with a small online shop for nationwide delivery of non-perishable lines. The Hessle shop opens Tuesday to Saturday, generally mid-morning to mid-afternoon, and the emphasis is on cut-to-order cheese and freshly baked bread rather than pre-packed supermarket fare. Regulars come as much for the sandwiches and daily bakes as for the cheese and charcuterie counters.
