GROUND occupies a building at 60 Beverley Road, just north of Hull city centre, and describes itself as a social centre for local, outsider and community art. Under one roof it runs a gallery, low-cost artist studios, a library, a print room and a shop selling books and zines, along with an events space used for exhibitions, workshops and music. It is artist-led and independent rather than council-run, and much of its workshop and events programme is free to attend, keeping the space open to people who might not otherwise use a gallery. Programming is frequent and changeable, from group shows to zine fairs and print sessions, and the studios give working artists an affordable base in the city. The emphasis is on participation as much as display, which sets it apart from a conventional commercial white-cube gallery.
