Macdonald Bros have been butchers in Pitlochry since 1928, and the third generation — Rory Macdonald — runs it now, with a second shop over in Aberfeldy. The reputation rests on competition: three-time champions at the World Sausage Roll Championship, with Diamond Awards from the Scotch Pie Club for the sausage rolls and, in 2012, for a venison, port and pickled walnut pie that tells you what a Highland Perthshire butcher can do with the game on the doorstep. The beef is Aberdeen Angus from farms they can name; there is venison and game in season, haggis, and the pies that win the medals. Two shops across ninety-odd years of one family is the honest definition of a local butcher — big enough to have earned the trophies, small enough that the name over the door is still the name doing the cutting. Closed Sundays, open early the rest of the week.
