Mercat Tours

Mercat Tours is an independent walking tour company based at Mercat House on Blair Street in the Old Town, running guided history and ghost tours that set off from the Mercat Cross on the Royal Mile. Founded in 1985, it holds exclusive access to the Blair Street Underground Vaults, chambers built into the arches of South Bridge in the eighteenth century, which feature on several of its evening tours. The daily programme includes history walks through the Old Town closes and wynds as well as themed ghost tours such as Ghostly Underground and Doomed, Dead and Buried, departing at set times through the afternoon and evening. Tickets can be bought online or at the company's own office, with online prices generally cheaper. It remains a single, family-founded operator rather than part of a national tour franchise.
