The Museum of Coastal Heritage and Geology, on Vernon Road off Valley Road, run by Scarborough Museums and Galleries. Opened in 1829 to a design suggested by William Smith, it is one of the world's first purpose-built museums; the Georgian gallery carries a frieze of local coastline geology by Smith's nephew John Phillips. Displays include the 11,000-year-old Star Carr artefacts and the Ancient Seas Gallery. The West Wing is currently closed following water leaks.
