The Barrel Inn stands in Bretton, a hamlet of five properties above Eyam, and trades under the name Barrel Inn (1597) Limited, a nod to the date carved into the building. Sitting around 1,300 feet above sea level, it is generally reckoned the highest pub in Derbyshire, with views across the Hope Valley that are said to reach five counties on a clear day. It operates as a freehouse, buying its own beer rather than being tied to a single brewery, and keeps a changing choice of real ales alongside a kitchen using mostly local ingredients. Inside, oak beams, flagstone floors, studded doors and low ceilings remain from the building's older fabric, along with open fires burning through the colder months. The inn also lets rooms for overnight stays.
