Albert Street Bakery trades from Victoria House on Albert Street in Eccles, a short walk from where James Birch opened the original Eccles cake shop in 1796. Siblings Sophie, Will and Joe Hamer run the bakery with their cousin Jude, producing sourdough loaves and a revived version of the Eccles cake made using butter pastry and Vostizza currants, believed to be the only version of the cake still made in the town itself. The bakery works on a pre-order model for collection or delivery on Wednesdays and Saturdays rather than keeping a shopfront open daily, and the family also runs a stall at Platt Fields Market in Manchester on Saturday mornings. Orders are taken through Instagram and Facebook rather than a dedicated website.
