Jen Smith set up Wild Gorse Pottery on Pollokshaws Road in Glasgow's Southside in 2019, after training as a maker and working from smaller studio spaces around the city. The shop is a working pottery: a wheel and kiln operate behind the counter, and customers can watch mugs, bowls, jugs and other stoneware being thrown and turned during opening hours. Smith's stoneware is wheel-thrown and finished in a small range of glazes, sold alongside seconds and one-off pieces from test batches. The studio also runs beginner and improver wheel-throwing classes in small groups, taught by Smith on the same equipment used for production work. It is a single-site business with no other outlets, trading Wednesday to Saturday afternoons. The shop sits among a run of independent southside units on Pollokshaws Road, between Strathbungo and Shawlands, and supplies some pieces to other independent retailers in the city on a wholesale basis.
