Ranjit Kaur opened her kitchen on Pollokshaws Road after years of cooking the Punjabi food she grew up making on her family's farm near Jandiala, in the Jalandhar district of the Punjab. She moved to Britain in the early 1980s and settled in Glasgow around 1990, and the restaurant she runs serves only vegetarian food, cooked the way it is eaten in Punjabi households rather than adapted for a Glasgow crowd. The short menu changes with whatever vegetables the local greengrocers have that week, running to lentil and chickpea curries, pakora, samosas and syrup-soaked desserts. Ranjit still works the kitchen; her son Hardeep and other family members wait tables out front. The premises previously housed the Afghan Village restaurant and, before that, a Pakistani café.
