David and Ruth Elkington ran a Helmsley coffee shop for three years before founding Roost in 2015, taking a unit in Talbot Yard — the Grade II listed carriage house that Malton's food-town revival converted into a courtyard of producers — and adding a roastery on the enterprise park whose two Giesen machines run entirely electric, fed since 2023 by the roof's own solar panels. The espresso bar pours Tuesday to Saturday; the beans supply the town that calls itself Yorkshire's food capital, a claim Malton's estate landlords promote and Roost's output quietly substantiates. Low-carbon coffee from a horse-carriage house: the Moors' old economy, re-employed.
