Strathmore Picture Houses opened the Birks Cinema on Aberfeldy's Dunkeld Street in 1939 with a screening of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the Art Deco building operated as a cinema and part-time bingo hall until it closed in the early 1980s. After years as an amusement arcade and snooker club, the Friends of the Birks Cinema bought the derelict building in 2009 and raised 1.8 million pounds to restore it, working with architect Robin Baker. It reopened on 19 April 2013 with a reduced 100-seat auditorium and digital 3D projection. The cinema is owned by the registered charity Birks Cinema Trust and run as a community venture, with a cafe-bar serving food and drink alongside the daily film programme. It is a Living Wage Scotland employer.
