Skye Shrubs is a small independent garden centre and nursery on Viewfield Road in Portree, set within the grounds of Viewfield House on the southern edge of the town. It grows much of its own stock, propagating maritime, hardy and acid-loving shrubs, bedding and some herbaceous plants at its nursery at Achachork just outside Portree, and supplements these with plants from specialist growers. The centre carries rhododendrons, roses, alpines, ornamental trees, fruit bushes and trees, vegetable plants, seeds, compost, tools and garden sundries, along with outdoor furniture and, in season, Nordmann fir Christmas trees. Its focus on locally propagated, weather-hardy plants suits the exposed island climate. Open Tuesday to Saturday with hours varying by month, it runs as a single family garden centre rather than a chain, serving gardeners across Skye and Lochalsh from its Portree base.
